During World War II, the YWCA of the U.S.A. cooperates with the World YWCA, YWCA organizations around the world, and other relief agencies to assist with the global cause. War relief activities include operating hostess houses, refugee relief, financial support, health aid and supplying provisions. In Turkey the greatest need is in assistance to refugees from Europe and Asia. Stories of the hardships and treatment faced by young girls prior to gaining entry to the Fabrica in Sivas tell a vivid story of the conditions in Turkey. With the World YWCA headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, news concerns the war efforts around the globe. Newsletters and correspondence give updates on the activities YWCA organizations are doing to help with war relief and a report of refugees around the world highlights the refugee crisis due to the war. Other letters and reports contain narrative updates of the war, requests for more assistance and supplies, and further descriptions of affect the war has on the women and civilians around the world.

YWCA of the U.S.A. National Board reports, guiding principles, and emphases for the Fifteenth National Convention of the Young Women's Christian Associations of the United States of America. The National Board publishes reports prior to the convention to assess the work of the previous biennium and report on studies conducted. The National Board assesses its role in the national program of the YWCA of the U.S.A., its work with local associations and divisions and its cooperation with the world movement as well as outside organizations. For the coming biennium, program emphasis is on the role of religion and participation in a world community and the meaning of democracy. The issue of inclusion and racism is discussed throughout the documents as it becomes more important nationally. It is especially prominent in the report of the Branch Study, a study of YWCA of the U.S.A. branch associations formed for African American members. All of the convention reports reflect the direction the national YWCA movement is taking and the way in which the local associations fit into the national movement. Following the reports and principles is a document summarizing suggestions from local associations for the convention structure and content.

Documents concerning YWCA war relief activities in Romania and South America. During World War II, the YWCA of the U.S.A. cooperates with the World YWCA, YWCA organizations around the world, and other relief agencies to assist with the global cause. War relief activities include operating hostess houses, refugee relief, financial support, health aid and supplying provisions. Many refugees travel through or seek refuge in Romania and the YWCA assists in providing for the needs of the refugees. Polish refugees in particular need assistance as they flee their country. Reports and correspondence contain accounts of the conditions in Romania, outline the needs for the war emergency work and request additional support or supplies. In South American and Latin American countries the effect of the war varies. Some letters notes that the war affects the people only financially or in lack of supplies. Other countries such as Argentina see refugees from Europe. In Argentina the effects of the war are complicated by internal political struggles. Correspondence and reports outline the political situations and its affect on YWCA activities. In addition to political struggles, Argentina sees conflicts between protestant and catholic organizations and people sometimes complicating the work of the protestant YWCA activities. World War II has a more direct effect on the people of Brazil as they are actively involved and host United States military bases. Letters and reports from Brazil describe the YWCA cooperation with the USO to serve military men in Brazil, assistance to employed women during wartime work and war work training programs.

Documents concerning requests refused, scholarships, secretary retirement, secretary requirements, social service, staff commission and staff meetings. The Foreign Division of the YWCA of the U.S.A. acts as an agent of the National board in cooperation with YWCA's in other countries and the World's YWCA to develop association work in other countries and to manage secretaries serving abroad. Management of the foreign field includes fundraising, communications and public relations, managing visits to the United States and abroad, and the training of leadership. Part of the leadership training includes the training of secretaries or YWCA members from other countries. Women interested in training and studying opportunities in the United States may apply to the Foreign Division for a scholarship. Letters of recommendation, applications and reports from the recipients give an overview of the scholarship programs. Prior to beginning work in another country, the Foreign Division assesses the cost, needs and anticipated permanence of an association in a particular country. All requests are not fulfilled especially as the budget decreases during the Great Depression. Lists of refused requests collect the cases that were turned away and may include the reason for refusal. Once work or collaboration is initiated secretaries serve aboard to assist with the development of the YWCA there. Secretaries are carefully selected, undergo thorough training and serve established terms. The requirements for a foreign secretaryship are detailed in reports and correspondence. As an arm of the YWCA of the U.S.A. the Foreign Division adheres to the democratic nature of the overall organization, making decision by consensus, initiating studies and commissions to inform decisions and reporting on meetings. Records of resolutions passed through the democratic process give an overview of the types of decisions being made and how they were reached. YWCA activities in other countries varies depending on the needs of the people there but one consistent aim is to assist in aspects of social work. The social work activities in YWCA centers around the world are gathered and listed in addition to narrative reports explaining the nature of the relationship between YWCA associations and social work.

Following World War I, YWCA of the U.S.A. secretaries visit Germany and write letters and reports describing the economic and social conditions affecting the country and the women served by the YWCA. As Hitler rises to power, the YWCA of the U.S.A. takes interest in the political situation. The toll it takes on the citizens of Germany and the refugee crisis becomes important as more and more people are displaced. Correspondence and reports from the American Committee for Christian German Refugees shed some light on the situation and document efforts made towards the refugee crisis. Seeking to educate its members on the German situation, the YWCA of the U.S.A. disseminates information regarding the Nazi rise and their propaganda. The published pamphlet, "Modern Christian German Martyrs," contains translated portions of Nazi pamphlets concerning religion and is meant to inform readers of the dangers of Nazi thinking. YWCA of the U.S.A. attention to Germany and its women continues after World War II through reconstruction efforts. The end of the microdex contains a few frames from the Holland subject file that are repeated in the Holland materials.
