Four pages. Lizzie writes to Nathaniel on May 1, 1864. Nathaniel responds on May 30, 1864, writing in between the lines of the initial letter. Lizzie wishes she could hear more from Nathaniel despite the news of his division being engaged in various battles. She writes at length of life at home, relatives, and especially their daughter Hattie; she notes that she is sure she would have nothing to write about were it not for their child. In his response, Nathaniel apologizes for the delays in his own writing and says he is not certain he will be able to return home anytime soon, although he greatly wishes he could. He reassures her that a letter mostly about Hattie is very welcome to him.
