About Compass

Five College Compass: Digital Collections is an online repository managed by the Compass Steering Group of the Five Colleges, Inc. It provides access to digital content stewarded by partner institutions, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. The content includes images, texts, and other media that is being made publicly available by the partner institutions for research, teaching, and learning.

Using Digital Items

All items contained in Compass are subject to terms and conditions outlined by the individual contributing institution. Contributing institutions are responsible for the observance of copyrights of the materials in their collections. Terms and conditions information for items in Compass can be found in the metadata fields: 1) Access, 2) Use and Reproduction, and 3) Copyright Statement. Compass has adopted RightStatements.org standards for the copyright statement field. Some items are in the public domain and may be freely used by anyone; in the case of other items, the contributing institution is the copyright holder and may grant permission for certain uses; for still others, the copyright owner is a third party or is unknown and users will need to conduct their own analysis (and may need to contact a copyright holder directly).

You may still be able to use items that are protected by copyright for educational, research, or other purposes. You--not the Five College Compass: Digital Collections or the item’s contributing institution--are responsible for determining whether your use of an item is permitted by law. You can learn more about what uses of copyrighted materials are allowed by law at the American Library Association’s Copyright Advisory Network, which has tools to help explain copyright, including copyright guidelines for instructors and fair use.

Requesting Reproductions

Unless the terms of use are clearly stated with respect to individual items, you must seek permission from the copyright holder for all uses that are not allowed by fair use or by provision in the United States copyright law. Requests for permission to create reproductions of any items on this site should be directed to the contributing institution.

Copyright Holders

Compass and the partner institutions welcome feedback from any copyright owners who are not properly identified on this site so that the necessary corrections may be made. If you have any additional information about the items or would like to suggest a correction, please contact the contributing institution directly. Be sure to include the title, contributing institution, identifier number, and the url of the item.
